Information for a visit to the Chianti area of Tuscany

What to see in Chianti.

Things to do in Chianti.

"Chianti" is not only the name of a great wine but also the name of the wonderful area of Tuscany where it is produced, an area packed with interesting things to see and do for visitors to the area. The Chianti area covers quite a large part of Tuscany, with the much smaller Chianti Classico region at its centre. Wine is not the only or even the principal source of interest here in Chianti. The landscape is hilly and very picturesque. A long history, extremely strict building codes, together with the natural conservatism of the population have resulted in an amazingly harmonious style of vernacular architecture which is extremely restful on the senses. The climate is pleasant with only a few weeks of winter cold and some days of excessive heat in summer. This latter can easily be escaped by heading for higher altitudes. On the northern limit of the Chianti Classico area is the art city of Florence and to the south is Sienna. Castles, abbeys, Romanesque churches, tower houses and villas dot the landscape, among forests, vineyards and olive groves. If you're visiting Florence, be sure to make provision for a few days stay in the Chianti countryside.
